Volkswagen Polo (14 - Present)

The Volkswagen Polo has long been the cream of the crop when it comes to small cars – it does everything a small car should do, and does it very well. However, even the mighty Polo is not immune to competition, and given the swathe of new small cars being released on the market this year, Volkswagen have wisely decided it was time for an update. As well as a minor facelift, it’s been future-proofed with a new range of engines that already meet the emission limits set by new Euro 6 standards being introduced in 2015, the interior has gotten a refresh and it’s been given a whole load of new techy features. It offers a remarkably quiet driving experience, that’s smooth and cosseting for your passengers and can hold its own on the motorway without the faintest sign of protest. Running costs are predictably low and the ‘small but tough’ motto that Volkswagen have branded it with should reassure you that these cars are built to last.

Look out for

  • No complaints as of yet

  • Neat and compact yet solid as a rock
  • Impressive range of eco-friendly, cost effective engine options

What we don't like

  • Steering can feel a little too light until you reach higher speeds
